I just found out a former student of mine has passed away suddenly. She would’ve been a junior in high school this year. I don’t know any details about the circumstances. All I can say is she was a good kid, and she’s gone way too soon.
I guess I’m lucky that in eleven years of teaching, this is the first former student who has passed (that I know about anyways). I’ve never had to deal with this, and I’m surprised at how hard I’m taking it.
Life is fragile. I really just want to hug my daughters now.

I’m so sorry. It’s so tragic that she was so young.

That kind of news is the worst. It happened to me my first year teaching so I will assure you that your feelings are completely normal. The student was going to be out for routine ACL surgery so I had prepped all the material he was going to miss. I was out of town for the weekend and I get home Sunday night to answering machine message from my Principal that the student had an allergic reaction to the anesthesia and passed in the OR.
I took it harder than his classmates but I attribute that to their graduating class lost a classmate a year from 7th to 12th grade.
